Lesson 9-Story telling (individual)

Today’s lesson 05th October is about telling a story of anything that can be made into concept map.

Here, I’m going to write about Pulau Ubin in Singapore because I’ve been to this place and it’s really an old and historic place. We have to use boat from Changi Village to reach to Pulau Ubin.

This story is taken from website: http://www.wildsingapore.com/ubin/places/legend.htm

Legends of Ubin

The traditional story of Ubin’s formation tells of a Frog, a Pig and an Elephant that challenged each other to a race from Singapore to Johor across the Straits. Anyone that failed would be turned into a rock. The frog failed and turned into Pulau Sekudu or Frog Island, which has a large frog-shaped boulder. The Pig and Elephant also failed and turned into Pulau Ubin.

The story seems curious as Ubin appears to us as one island today. So why the Pig and the Elephant?

According to one account, Ubin was originally two islands divided by the Jelutong River. When prawn farming took off on the island, mud banks (called bunds) were used to dam the river and thus eventually joined the two halves.

Briefly about Pulau Ubin

Pulau Ubin is in essence, the last ‘kampung’ (village) in Singapore. A stroll through Ubin takes you back to Singapore in the 1960’s with the simpler pleasures of life. The slow lane starts as soon as you join the queue for the bumboat at Changi. As you arrive, all cares are left behind.

Ubin is a great day trip spent walking or pedaling through rustic roads under swaying coconut palms, exploring shady trails in overgrown rubber plantations, checking out secluded beaches and flourishing mangroves. On Ubin, the food tastes better, air is fresher and sights and sounds so soothing to the soul.
